Salisbury Wednesday Preview

Salisbury must be one of the most pleasant racecourses in the UK and Wednesday’s card is the highlight of the season with the Listed Upavon Stakes.

The one I like here is Richard Hannon’s Lustrous who finished strongly to take second to Bracelet in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot. That form entitles her to start favourite here but she has since run poorly in Ireland and was only fifth at Goodwood.

I am prepared to overlook the Irish Oaks form as you sometimes get horses that just don’t travel well but I am a little concerned by her Goodwood defeat. There are a whole host of promising fillies in this race including the unbeaten My Spirit and the rapidly improving Kleo. Both should run well along with Godolphin’s Tearless who already has a comfortable course and distance win to her credit.

Richard Hughes won’t be keeping the video of the ride he gave When Will It End at Goodwood in his archive. Every gap he went for seemed to close immediately and he can be counted an unlucky loser. He is 4lbs better off with the winner Grigolo but that need not necessarily guarantee that he will reverse the form. Mark Johnston’s horse was not stopping in front and it should be close between the pair. However, I am hoping that Sir Michael Stoute’s Darshini can beat them both.

He made the running at Sandown last time out and Ryan Moore looked to have kept a little up his sleeve. The bare form isn’t outstanding but he can lead his rivals a merry dance here.

The same combination should be back in the winner’s enclosure half an hour later with Tercel. The gelding won nicely at Sandown, this time with Moore arriving late on the scene. He did not really have to ask for everything that day and there is plenty of room for improvement. Potentate looks the obvious danger for the Hannon and Hughes team.

Moore can make it three for the day when he partners Luca Cumani’s Petticoat lane in the 4.30. The daughter of High Chaparral ought to have won at Sandown last time out but was blocked in her run up the rail and had to switch to the outside. Although only fourth of five, she was beaten less than two lengths by the winner and can make amends.

Darshini 2.50 Salisbury at 5-4 Paddy Power

Tercel 3.25 Salisbury at 6-4 Paddy Power

Lustrous 3.55 Salisbury at 11-1 Bet Victor Non-runner

Kleo 3.55 Salisbury at 15-2 Sportingbet (each-way)

Petticoat Lane 4.30 Salisbury at 9-4 Paddy Power

Salisbury Monday Preview

There are some very competitive races at Salisbury on Monday but the best bets may lie in the maiden races early in the card. Richard Hannon has a fine record at the track and his filly Tea In Transvaal is having her fifth outing of the season in the 2.20.

At first glance, she may seem a little disappointing having shown plenty of promise on her debut at Ascot. She finished a close fourth and was made favourite for her second outing at Newbury. She came up against a very smart filly in Lightning Thunder and had to settle for second place.

She stepped up to a mile for the first time at Goodwood in September where Richard Hughes attempted to make all. He held all bar Uchenna, going down by a head in the final strides. She ran another good race on her most recent start when third in the maiden race won by Taghrooda. Andrew Balding’s promising Casual Smile was runner-up and the form looks rock solid.

She drops back to six furlongs on Monday and is likely to be right up with the pace. Nassiki Kasta shaped well on her debut and could be a danger but the main threat may come from the unraced Allegria. She is by Dalakhani out of a Sadler’s Wells mare and represents the in-form John Gosden and William Buick combination.

The second division should go to Ryan Moore aboard the once-raced Dutch Romance for Charlie Hills. She ran a race packed full of promise at Newbury when very considerately ridden by Steve Drowne. She stayed on strongly to be less than four lengths adrift of Extremity at the line and looks certain to improve for the experience.

Joohania also ran well on her debut at Kempton whilst Aertex could be better than her first run suggests. Andrew Balding’s Alumina is a daughter of Invincible Spirit and makes her racecourse debut. Dutch Romance should be able to win this on the way to better things.

Dutch Romance (2.50 Salisbury)

Salisbury Wednesday Preview

Vorda (2-1) made sure that we finished Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting on a winning note. She looked very impressive to me and it will be fascinating to see how she gets on at the Breeders’ Cup next month. It was certainly a great week of trials for the 1000 Guineas and I wouldn’t despair if you have backed Rizeena or Ihtimal ante-post. Neither got the run of the race and could still make live classic contenders next spring.

After a quiet start to the week, there is some decent racing at Salisbury on Wednesday. The Conditions race at 4.30 brings together Justice Day and Expert who were second and third at Doncaster recently. With Figure Of Speech also in the field and all three having had busy seasons, this looks like a race to watch rather than get involved in.

One horse that should offer some value is John Gosden’s Nabucco. The four-year-old landed some nice bets when winning a decent handicap at Newmarket in June and was last seen finishing second at Glorious Goodwood. That was a decent effort as he had to overcome a wide draw and race more prominently than would have been ideal. He fought off all challengers bar the confidently ridden Viewpoint who is again in opposition tomorrow.

Nabucco is only 2lbs better off with Viewpoint for a length so it could be close between the pair but I just feel that Gosden’s horse will come out on top. If Buick can settle him on or near the lead without having to chase after him, he will tough to pass in the closing stages. Most of the field are well exposed with the exception of Andrew Balding’s Open Water who was a beaten favourite at Windsor in May. Paddy Power and BetVictor have chalked up Nabucco at 5-2 and he looks the best bet on the card.

Red Galileo is a nice colt and has been unlucky to finish runner-up in all three starts to date. He looks set to get off the mark under Ryan Moore at Kempton tomorrow evening with only three opponents. Mark Johnston’s Zumurudah is the obvious threat having won comfortably at Carlisle last time out but Red Galileo should have his measure.

Nabucco (3.55 Salisbury) 5-2 Paddy Power, BetVictor

Red Galileo (7.40 Kempton) 5-11 Betfair

Racing Preview Friday 30th August

Although there isn’t much in the way of Group race action this weekend, there are still plenty of decent races taking place across the UK. Friday’s cards at Chester, Sandown and Salisbury are all worth a second look.

Last week I backed Nezar in the big sales race at York and he ran well enough to suggest that the nursery at Chester (4.05) is his for the taking. He was slowly away but made up ground steadily in the closing stages to be a never-nearer third at the line. Frankie Dettori takes over from Johnny Murtagh on Friday and even a draw in the outside stall shouldn’t prevent him from winning here.

Over at Sandown, William Buick teams up with John Gosden’s Breden in the 3.55. This horse had to be driven right out to win at Newmarket last time but holds some big entries including the Cambridgeshire. The handicapper has put him up only 4lbs for that victory and I’m hoping that there is more improvement to come. He delivered his challenge on the far side that day and very few horses won from there at the meeting.

Buick may not be in the best mood after the news that James Doyle will step into his shoes for the Prince Khaled Abdulla horses in future, starting on Saturday with 2000 Guineas favourite Kingman. With the likes of Remote and Excess Knowledge also now likely to be ridden by Doyle, Buick may feel that he has a point to prove in the coming weeks.

Salisbury provides the main evening entertainment with the feature race being the Listed Stonehenge Stakes. This looks booked for Washaar for Richard Hannon and Paul Hanagan. He may not be one of the stable starts but he was never going to be beaten at Ascot last time and I think he can see off his rivals here.

Hannon can strike again at his local track when Go For Broke runs in the maiden race at 5.45. I think you can best describe his first outing as “educational” after he was nursed into fourth place at Windsor. Roger Varian’s newcomer High Accolade is an unknown quantity but hopefully Go For Broke won’t live up his name!

Luca Cumani’s Don Padeja hacked up at Leicester last week and turns out quickly with a 6lb penalty. He won with any amount in hand and should be able to follow up in the 7.45.

Nezar 4-6 Bet365

Don Pedija 6-4 Bet365

Washaar 4-5 Ladbrokes

Go For Broke

Breden 7-2 Bet365
