Sandown Thursday Preview

The pick of the action in the UK on Thursday comes from Sandown’s evening fixture with a six race card starting at 5.40.

The most interesting event on the card is the handicap for three-year-olds at 7.25 over ten furlongs. Several of these have plenty of room for improvement with three of them having won last time out. John Gosden’s Prince Of Stars has been notable by his absence since winning at Chester back in May and has been well supported in the early skirmishes for his handicap debut.

He didn’t beat much at Chester and the Wood Ditton form has taken a few knocks so he is passed over at odds of around 5-2. Mythical Madness won a poor race last time and Hoop Of Colour overcame trouble in running to win a five-runner race at Pontefract. He is up a few pounds but the form of Lady Cecil’s stable does not inspire confidence.

Luca Cumani’s Comedy King is probably better than he showed last time out while Hedge End is incredibly consistent but has not won since December. She finished well at Goodwood last week behind Magique and runs off the same mark here. She seems to try her heart out and is the each-way selection in a tricky contest.

Roger Charlton’s Tides Reach is a bit of a puzzler in the closing handicap. She has always looked more of a soft ground filly but won by eight lengths at Windsor on good to firm last time out. I think she was flattered by the runner-up having been virtually eased to a walk by Richard Hughes at the line and she is worth opposing.

I have been impressed by the way in which Silvestre De Sousa has kept his head down after the poor treatment he received from Godolphin. He teams up with Unison who has run a couple of solid races and should go close here. He is closely weighted with Sweet Martoni but can just sneak it.

Over at Brighton, I think Lear’s Rock can improve on his debut fourth at Sandown and may be good enough to beat Hawkmeister. Richard Hannon’s runner is fitted with the blinkers here after a disappointing run at Lingfield last time out. Azmaam’s run at Sandown last time is best forgotten after a tardy start and he showed enough on his debut to win Haydock’s 2.40 race.

Newbury Saturday Preview

Racing fans get an unexpected bonus at Newbury on Saturday with the return to action of last year’s Eclipse winner Al Kazeem. Roger Charlton’s multiple Group 1 winner proved infertile at stud and he is back in Listed class here as a preparation for better things.

Charlton is never one to blow his own trumpet but you can be sure that he is happy with the horse to allow him to take his chance. I remember a horse called Radetzky returning to action at Royal Ascot for similar reasons and he bolted up at 25-1. There will be no such odds available about Al Kazeem and he ought to win this with the minimum of fuss.

Token Of Love should continue the terrific run of the William Haggas stable when she lines up in a very competitive fillies handicap at 2.05. She has always been well regarded at home but has taken her time to put it together on the track. She is up 6lbs for her latest win at Newmarket but she was very impressive that day and may just be one of those horses that keep improving.

There are plenty of dangers, notably Provenance of Sir Michael Stoute’s who was a disappointing favourite at Sandown last time out. She is fitted with the hood here and will be a huge threat if able to reproduce her debut effort at Kempton. Feedyah ran well at Royal Ascot but has top weight while Enraptured is yet to race this season for John Gosden.

The Weatherbys Super Sprint has been farmed by Richard Hannon Senior down the years with seven winners and Junior will be hoping to keep the tradition going tomorrow. He saddles several runners but it is hard to ignore top weight Tiggy Wiggy after her game effort at Ascot. She was narrowly beaten in the Queen Mary and it looked a high class renewal. There are plenty of dangers and it may be worth having a little each-way on Pillar Box after her easy Bath win.

Richard Fahey won this last year and saddles five in an attempt to follow up. Realtra looks the obvious one with bottom weight after finishing second in a Listed race in Ireland. She must have every chance of making the weight tell against Tiggy Wiggy and is feared most.

Salisbury Monday Preview

There are some very competitive races at Salisbury on Monday but the best bets may lie in the maiden races early in the card. Richard Hannon has a fine record at the track and his filly Tea In Transvaal is having her fifth outing of the season in the 2.20.

At first glance, she may seem a little disappointing having shown plenty of promise on her debut at Ascot. She finished a close fourth and was made favourite for her second outing at Newbury. She came up against a very smart filly in Lightning Thunder and had to settle for second place.

She stepped up to a mile for the first time at Goodwood in September where Richard Hughes attempted to make all. He held all bar Uchenna, going down by a head in the final strides. She ran another good race on her most recent start when third in the maiden race won by Taghrooda. Andrew Balding’s promising Casual Smile was runner-up and the form looks rock solid.

She drops back to six furlongs on Monday and is likely to be right up with the pace. Nassiki Kasta shaped well on her debut and could be a danger but the main threat may come from the unraced Allegria. She is by Dalakhani out of a Sadler’s Wells mare and represents the in-form John Gosden and William Buick combination.

The second division should go to Ryan Moore aboard the once-raced Dutch Romance for Charlie Hills. She ran a race packed full of promise at Newbury when very considerately ridden by Steve Drowne. She stayed on strongly to be less than four lengths adrift of Extremity at the line and looks certain to improve for the experience.

Joohania also ran well on her debut at Kempton whilst Aertex could be better than her first run suggests. Andrew Balding’s Alumina is a daughter of Invincible Spirit and makes her racecourse debut. Dutch Romance should be able to win this on the way to better things.

Newbury Friday 20th September Preview

Mount Logan (5-4) got us back on the winning track yesterday at Yarmouth and looks like a decent colt in the making. Newbury and Ayr take centre stage on Friday and I’m keen on the chances of Richard Hannon’s Pupil in the one-mile Haynes, Hanson & Clark Stakes.

Those with long memories will recall that this is the race that saw the arrival of Shergar and Lammtarra on the racing scene, though I seriously doubt that there is anything of that class on show this season.

Pupil is a son of Mastercraftsman out of the speedy Blue Iris but stamina rather than speed seems to be his strong suit. Evidently he was well regarded at home before he made his debut at Newbury because he went off 7-2 favourite in a field of 12. There must have been some long faces after the race as he failed to pick up at all for Richard Hughes and beat only two home.

Whatever the reason for his disappointing debut, he looked a different proposition when stepped up to a mile at Doncaster on good to soft going. Once again, Hughes was able to settle him in rear but this time he made smooth progress with over two furlongs to travel. Mark Johnston’s Double Bluff took him into the race nicely and Hughes briefly had to get serious with Pupil to go in pursuit. In the final 100 yards he was well on top and powered clear to win by a length and a half.

None of the placed horses have reappeared to date so it is difficult to evaluate the form but Pupil looks sure to run well on Friday. Godolphin’s Pinzolo has won his only start at Newmarket but it looked a lot harder work than Pupil’s victory. It has to be said that he was going on strongly at the end so is another that should see out the mile well at Newbury.

Red Galileo has finished second on both of his outings, chasing home another Godolphin horse in Golden Town at York last month. He may have been slightly flattered to finish within a length and a half of the winner who wandered around in the closing stages. What About Carlo had Castle Combe behind him when winning at Goodwood but the latter could improve for the experience.

Sandown 18th September Preview

The highlight of Wednesday’s action is the Listed Fortune Stakes at Sandown with Richard Hannon’s Wentworth bidding to step up from handicap company for the first time. The son of Acclamation has always shown the potential to make it at Group level and it was no surprise when he lifted the Golden Mile at Goodwood after near-misses at Ascot and Sandown.

After winning two of his three races as a juvenile, he reappeared at Goodwood over six furlongs in May where he put in his entry for the unluckiest loser of the season. With only six rivals, Richard Hughes contrived to get himself completely boxed in and the colt never saw an inch of daylight until it was too late. He was eventually beaten only a quarter of a length in third but should certainly have won convincingly.

On the strength of that run, he was a heavily backed 7-2 favourite for the one-mile Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot. He was again held up towards the rear before weaving his way through traffic to finish a never-nearer fourth, under two lengths behind Roca Tumu. Punters kept the faith when he went to Sandown for the Coral Challenge.

Hughes, possibly mindful of the criticism he had received for his riding of the colt on his previous two starts, had him close up from a poor draw but he could not repel the late challenge of Prince Of Johanne and had to settle for third. He finally came good on his most recent start when holding off the useful Cape Peron at Goodwood to win off a handicap mark of 99. An official rise of 7lbs for that success still leaves him some way behind Penitent but there are reasons for believing that he can bridge the gap.

Hughes is adamant that the fast ground the reason for his defeats at Ascot and Sandown and believes that he will prove a much better colt with give in the ground. A heavy shower prior to racing was just sufficient for him to let himself down at Goodwood last time and the Irishman is confident that there is more to come.

By contrast, Penitent was well below his best last time although he definitely sets the standard on last year’s form behind Gordon Lord Byron at Longchamp. He was beaten only a length and a half in the Group 1 Prix de La Foret and would take some beating on that form. The best of the rest could be Andrew Balding’s Bana Wu but it will be disappointing if Hannon’s colt cannot take this on the way to better things.

Racing Preview Friday 30th August

Although there isn’t much in the way of Group race action this weekend, there are still plenty of decent races taking place across the UK. Friday’s cards at Chester, Sandown and Salisbury are all worth a second look.

Last week I backed Nezar in the big sales race at York and he ran well enough to suggest that the nursery at Chester (4.05) is his for the taking. He was slowly away but made up ground steadily in the closing stages to be a never-nearer third at the line. Frankie Dettori takes over from Johnny Murtagh on Friday and even a draw in the outside stall shouldn’t prevent him from winning here.

Over at Sandown, William Buick teams up with John Gosden’s Breden in the 3.55. This horse had to be driven right out to win at Newmarket last time but holds some big entries including the Cambridgeshire. The handicapper has put him up only 4lbs for that victory and I’m hoping that there is more improvement to come. He delivered his challenge on the far side that day and very few horses won from there at the meeting.

Buick may not be in the best mood after the news that James Doyle will step into his shoes for the Prince Khaled Abdulla horses in future, starting on Saturday with 2000 Guineas favourite Kingman. With the likes of Remote and Excess Knowledge also now likely to be ridden by Doyle, Buick may feel that he has a point to prove in the coming weeks.

Salisbury provides the main evening entertainment with the feature race being the Listed Stonehenge Stakes. This looks booked for Washaar for Richard Hannon and Paul Hanagan. He may not be one of the stable starts but he was never going to be beaten at Ascot last time and I think he can see off his rivals here.

Hannon can strike again at his local track when Go For Broke runs in the maiden race at 5.45. I think you can best describe his first outing as “educational” after he was nursed into fourth place at Windsor. Roger Varian’s newcomer High Accolade is an unknown quantity but hopefully Go For Broke won’t live up his name!

Luca Cumani’s Don Padeja hacked up at Leicester last week and turns out quickly with a 6lb penalty. He won with any amount in hand and should be able to follow up in the 7.45.
