Boston Celtics look set to challenge Cleveland in Eastern Conference

A week ago we recommended you back the Washington Wizards at 13/8 with Bet Victor to win the Southeast Division and the Boston Celtics at 6/5 with Coral to win the Atlantic Division. We hope you followed that advice because in the past week both teams have won all their games and surged clear at the top of those divisions. They are both now odds-on to win them: the Wizards have gone in from 13/8 to 10/11, with Sky Bet, William Hill and Betway offering the best odds; while the Celtics have gone from 6/5 to being heavy favourites, with Betway offering the best price at 3/4. In the past week the Celtics’ closest rivals, the Toronto Raptors, have lost twice, while the Hawks and the Hornets, who are vying with Washington in the Southeast Division, have also stumbled. The Celtics and Wizards have great momentum, and if you did not back them a week ago, 10/11 and 3/4 still makes a nice double. Or you could try a six-fold: Utah Jazz, Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards all to win their divisions.

Eastern Conference

In the Western Conference, the Golden State Warriors are on fire and should make another Finals, despite the superb form of the San Antonio Spurs. But things are much more interesting in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers, last season’s NBA Championship winners led by LeBron James, have been heavy favourites to win it all season, but the Cavs have struggled to build momentum this season. They cannot seem to post a long run of consecutive wins and have lost five of their last 10. No such problems for the Celtics, who are on a seven-game winning streak, or the Wizards, who have also won seven in a row. Both could really give the Cavs a run for their money in the Eastern Conference. Of the two, the Celtics are the most likely. Boston guard Isaiah Thomas has scored 20 or more points in 34 consecutive games and that has been the driving force behind their superb run since Christmas. The Wizards, meanwhile, have won 16 consecutive home games and are 23-9 since December 1. It’s currently advantage Cleveland in the playoff race, as the defending champs are 34-15, but the Celtics are hot on the tail, with 33-18, while the Wizards are back on 30-20. Cleveland is in the driving seat, but either could steal the top seed from them. The best price you can get on Cleveland winning the conference is a lowly 4/11, but the 12/1 on offer at 888 Sport on the Celtics looks appealing, as does the longer shot of 33/1 available at Paddy Power on the Wizards.

Upcoming Games

The Celtics travel to Sacramento on Thursday to face the Kings, who are low on confidence after recently blowing double-digit leads to lose three times in a row and are 20-31. The Celtics are a juggernaut right now and should win that one comfortably. On the same day, the in-form Wizards travel to Brooklyn to play the Nets, who are pretty much the worst team in the league right now. The Nets have lost nine in a row and 12 in a row at home, so the Wizards should crush them. A double of the Celtics and Wizards to cover the spread looks good here. To broaden it out to a treble, the Spurs play the 76ers in Philadelphia and should be confident of a resounding win. After the Warriors, the Spurs have the best record in the league this season and the 76ers are on a three-game losing streak and looking short of ideas.

NBA Betting: Washington Wizards Offer Great Value in Southeast Division

The Golden State Warriors have maintained their dominance in the NBA over the past week and are now 9-1 in their last 10 games. But the real surprise is the form of the Washington Wizards, who have gone 8-2 in their last 10 to become the second hottest team in the league, ahead of the Spurs, Cavaliers and many more excellent teams. It has thrust a spotlight on the Southeast Division, where the Wizards are battling the Atlanta Falcons for supremacy, and right now there is plenty of value to be had in backing the Wizards to win it.

Southeast Division

There are three teams in the running to win this competitive division: the Hawks, the Wizards and the Charlotte Hornets. A couple of weeks ago we said the Hornets looked a poor option at 9/4. That has borne out, with Charlotte going out to 9/2 on the back of a very poor run of form that has left them 3-7 in their last 10. It now looks like a straight fight between the Hawks and the Wizards. If you agree, you are guaranteed a profit by backing both. Bet Victor has 11/8 on the Hawks and 13/8 on the Wizards, so if you back the pair of them with an equal stake, you are guaranteed a healthy margin regardless of which one wins. You just have to hope the Hornets do not enjoy a resurgence, and that is not looking likely right now. Charlotte started the season well and went 20-14 to be in contention, but are 3-9 in their last 12. That leaves them on 23-25 and they are 0-7 on the road in January, so this away form is likely to cost them. Meanwhile, the Hawks are 27-20 and the Wizards are 26-20. Washington is really on a roll right now, so if you only want to back one team, they are the best option as they offer greater value and are soaring.

Atlantic Division

The other division offering a bit of value is the Atlantic, where the Toronto Raptors and the Boston Celtics have the identical record of 28-19. The Celtics are in marginally better form, 10-6 compared to the Raptors’ 5-5, but Toronto is odds-on favourites to win it. Sky Bet, William Hill, Paddy Power and Bet Victor all have 4/6 on the Raptors, while the Celtics are best priced at 6/5 with Coral. Both are interesting options, but the greater value is on the Celtics, and if they can get their defence playing as well as it was last season they can take this division, so they might make a nice double with the Wizards.

Upcoming Games

Wednesday sees the Wizards host a struggling New York Knicks team and they should keep the good form going there with a win. On the same day, a huge game sees the Oklahoma City Thunder take on the San Antonio Spurs. Both are 7/3 in their last 10 and the Spurs are second in the Western Conference behind only the all-conquering Warriors, while the Thunder are sixth but really knocking on the door of the top four places. It should prove an interesting game and the Spurs will have a tough job containing Oklahoma City’s MVP contender Russell Westbrook, but San Antonio has been in excellent form of late, beating the Cavaliers and the Raptors, and should win this one. On Thursday, the struggling Hornets travel to California to play the Warriors, and you can expect Golden State to crush them, covering a reasonable large spread in the process. On the same day, the in-form Utah Jazz should have too much for the Milwaukee Bucks, who are on a dreadful run, and should also cover a heavy spread there.

NBA Western Conference teams are asserting their dominance

The Golden State Warriors have returned to the top of most pundits’ NBA power rankings after going on a seven-game winning streak. The odds on them winning the NBA Championship have gone into 4/5 on the back of this fine run of form, and they look unstoppable at present. The only teams enjoying similar winning runs are the San Antonio Spurs and the Utah Jazz, both Western Conference teams. It makes it look increasingly like the winner of the NBA Championship will come from this conference.

Winning Conference

The Golden State Warriors are favourites to avenge last season’s Finals defeat to LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers and win another NBA Championship. It would be their second in three years and they really have been the dominant force in recent times. Over in the Eastern Conference, the Cavs lost their last game to leave them with a win ratio of .714. That does not compare at all favourably to the Warriors’ .864 or the Spurs .791. Even the third best team in the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets, have a better record than Cleveland, with a win percentage of .723.

Below the Cavs in the Eastern Conference, the Raptors and Celtics are both on losing streaks, and none of the leading teams are playing all that well. In any power rankings, five of the top six teams right now would come from the Western Conference. The favourites, third favourites and fourth favourites to win the NBA Championship are all Western Conference teams, so it looks like the winner will come from this conference. Bet365 and Sky Bet are running books on which conference will produce the winner of the NBA Championship and both are offering 2/5 on it being the Western Conference, which looks a great bet right now.

Northwest Division

Most of the divisions look sewn up and are dominated by clear frontrunners, but one that looks interesting still is the Northwest, where the Utah Jazz are in front on 29-16, followed by the Oklahoma City Thunder on 25-19. The Thunder have MVP candidate Russell Westbrook, but that has not been enough to stop them losing their past two games. The Jazz, meanwhile, are on a remarkable six-game winning run, a streak bettered only by the Warriors, and Rudy Gobert is in fantastic form for them. They already have a healthy advantage and the gap should widen, so the 5/12 available at Ladbrokes on the Jazz winning this division looks a great bet.

Upcoming games

On Tuesday the Warriors play the Miami Heat and should win comfortably, so much so that they are just 1/8 with Betfred and Paddy Power. These teams played on January 11 and the Warriors ran out 12-point winners. Since then their form has been immense: they have won their last five games by 20 points, 35 points (against the Cavaliers, no less), 21 points, 17 points and 20 points. The Heat are on a three-game winning run but are likely to come unstuck against the Warriors, who can cover an 11-points spread at 10/11 with Betfred and Paddy Power. Wednesday sees leading lights from the Western and Eastern Conferences face off as the Spurs, second in the Western Conference, play the Toronto Raptors, second in the Eastern Conference. Expect the supremacy of the Western Conference to be asserted here with a narrow win for the Spurs, who are in excellent form while the Raptors have lost two in a row. On Friday the Jazz plays the LA Lakers and should cover a generous spread.

Spurs, Warriors and Raptors look good for treble

The past week has seen the Golden State Warriors embark on another winning run and their season win percentage now stands at a remarkable .857, with a record of 24-4. That percentage is the third best of all time, and if they keep it up they will start threatening to break the all-time record of .890 they set last season. In that phenomenal campaign, they broke the record set by Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls in 1996, but they still weren’t good enough to win the NBA Championship as they lost to LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers in the final.

The Warriors have responded in style this year, but they are not having it all their own way in the Western Conference, as the excellent San Antonio Spurs are on 22-5, with a win percentage of .815 currently leaving them 15th on the all-time list. Last year the Spurs ended on .817, the joint eighth best record of all-time. They lost to the Thunder in the playoff semifinal, but have proven themselves modern greats, and are on course for another fantastic season.

Western Conference

Bookmakers are offering lines on the amount of regular season games various NBA teams will win this season, and have most of them covered. The 10/11 Bet Victor is offering on the Spurs to win more than 57.5 games currently looks like a brilliant bet. Last season they won 67 games and, despite the retirement of long-time captain Tim Duncan, they are in very similar form this year and on course to once again reach 67 wins. It has not been quite so generous with the Warriors, who have to win more than 67.5 games in the over/under betting, again at 10/11. They should cover this, though. They are in superb form and finished with 67 wins two seasons ago, when they went on to win the Championship, and bettered that with the record breaking 73 last season. They are currently on course for 70 or 71 wins and should, therefore, be good to get at least 68. A double on the Spurs and the Warriors would get you odds of 41/25, which looks great.

Eastern Conference

The Cavaliers’ .760 would only leave them third in the Western Conference, but they are comfortably leading the Eastern Conference, with second-placed Toronto Raptors back on .704. They may not be as consistent as the Warriors or the Spurs, but James is a big game player, and they look good to win the conference again this season – they are 4/9 with Paddy Power to do so. Whether they will win more than 67.5 games (the over/under benchmark set by bookmakers) is another matter, however. The freak defeat to the Grizzlies last week should set alarm bells ringing, and that bet might be best avoided as they are currently on course for 62. A better bet could be on Toronto Raptors getting over 50.5 wins, at 4/5 with Bet Victor. Last season they got 56, and this time they are on course for 57. Put Toronto in a treble with the Warriors and Spurs and you get 139/25.

Upcoming Games

On Wednesday, a huge game sees the Spurs play the form team of the league, the Houston Rockets, who are on a 10-game winning streak. Someone has to put an end to it sooner or later, and the Spurs can be the team to do it, so backing them outright might be a good idea. Another good team, the Utah Jazz, play the Warriors on the same day, but with the way the Warriors are playing at present you would expect them to cover a reasonable spread. The Raptors play the struggling Brooklyn Nets and should cover a large spread. The Cavs play the Bucks twice in quick succession, but might be best avoided after they went 1-1 against the Grizzlies last week when they played twice in a row. Then it’s the big game on Christmas Day, where the Warriors travel to Cleveland looking for revenge for their final defeat last season. Given the way the form is going, the pendulum has shifted to the Warriors, who are currently looking good to get a road win at 20/21 with Paddy Power.

NBA Set for a Christmas Cracker

Reigning champions the Cleveland Cavaliers have been in sensational form over the past week and blew away the Raptors, Heat, Knicks and Hornets in quick succession. The odds on them winning the Eastern Conference have shortened considerably, and they are now just 10/3 to win the NBA Championship. The Golden State Warriors have maintained their strong form, despite a blip against the Grizzlies, and the two still look on course for a showdown in the Championship series. There are plenty of exciting games to look forward to in the week ahead, but already thoughts are turning to Christmas Day, when the Cavs host the Warriors in what could prove to be the game of the season so far, and that could give a strong indication as to who will seize the Championship.

Eastern Conference

Odds on the Cavaliers winning the Eastern Conference have shortened from 13/20 to just 4/9 in a week, thanks to their excellent winning streak. Star man LeBron James continues to break records and in the past week became the first player to ever reach 7,000 career assists along with 27,000 points and 7,000 rebounds. He is an all-around superstar, and teams simply cannot handle him at the moment. As we suggested last week, the Cavaliers destroyed the Knicks and easily covered the spread. They are now just 1/18 to win the Central Division and look good for the Eastern Conference, so it might be worth getting on them sooner rather than later as the odds are only going one way at present.

Western Conference

We tipped the Warriors to easily cover the point spread against the Clippers and they did so, also beating the Pacers, Jazz and Timberwolves, but an 110-89 defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies was a serious blip. The Warriors were sleepwalking through that game and it raises question marks over their mentality going into a crucial part of the season. The odds on them winning the Western Conference have gone out to 2/5 with some bookmakers, as the Spurs are looking good, so now could be the time to back them.

NBA Championship

The Warriors have drifted out to 5/6 with Sky Bet and Bet Victor thanks to the recent form of the Cavs, so now might be a good time to back them if you still think they will do it. They still rank as the best team in the league this season and top the power rankings as the NBA’s top scoring and top shooting team. But the Cavs are building up a head of steam and the odds are likely to continue tumbling on them, so it could also be worth getting on them at 10/3 with Bet Victor now.

Upcoming games

A standout game sees the Warriors take on the Knicks on Friday. After the Cavs destroyed the Knicks, the Warriors will want to put in a similarly emphatic performance to show they are still the dominant force in the NBA, so backing them to cover the spread might be a good idea. Similarly, the Cavs play the Grizzlies and will be keen to beat them to land a psychological blow against the Warriors.

The Warriors blew everyone away to win the NBA Championship two years ago but lost out to Cleveland in the finals last season, and everything looks to be heading for a grudge match between these two in this season’s finals as they are the best teams in the NBA of late. They face off in Cleveland on Christmas Day and it promises to be a thriller. Bookmakers are already offering odds and it is tight, with Paddy Power offering 20/23 on the Cavs and 20/21 on the Warriors. With the way LeBron is playing at the moment, you wouldn’t want to bet against him turning it on in front of his beloved hometown fans, and that 20/23 on the Cavaliers looks tempting.

Rugby League: NRL Round 10 Review

Wins to the Storm, the Cowboys and the Dragons have seen all three of them join the Broncos at the top of the NRL ladder.  All three enjoyed comfortable wins against quality opposition in a round that also saw two games go to golden point deciders.

Here’s our take on the eight Round 10 games:

Canterbury Bulldogs (10) v Sydney Roosters (24)

James Graham lasted just 27 minutes in his return from injury and the Bulldogs captain was badly missed as Sydney scored a comfortable win to kick off Round 10.  Jake Friend was the main beneficiary of the increased space he was afforded post Graham’s concussion.  Friend exploited the middle of the park expertly and had two try assists in a fine individual performance.  The other standout individual performance came from Roger Tuivasa-Sheck whose fleet footed antics resulted in 285 running metres and a 38th minute try.

The Roosters two tries before half time effectively sealed the game before Mitch Aubusson and Aidan Guerra rounded it off.  The 24-14 margin made to a look a little closer than it ever was because a late try to Moses Mbye.

The NSW halves battle that was tipped as an Origin trial was slightly disappointing.  None of the four players reached any great heights, however that won’t worry coach Laurie Daley as much as Michael Jennings’ failure to finish the game.

North Queensland Cowboys (31) v Brisbane Broncos (20)

The Cowboys avenged a Round 3 loss to the Broncos by playing near flawless footy to run out winners by 31 to 20.  The Cowboys completed their sets at close to 90% and turned a weight of possession and pressure into a Michael Morgan hat-trick.

That was despite conceding the opening two tries of the game as a fast starting Broncos side led through Lachlan Maranta and Jordan Kahu.  The Broncos initially did well to prevent the predictable Cowboys comeback, but so exceptional was Jonathan Thurston’s game management they couldn’t do so forever.

Thurston was excellent, controlling play, and using Morgan, Coote, Ethan Lowe and James Tamou expertly to deliver two competition points for his side and see them join the Broncos at the top of the table.  From a horror start they Cowboys have now won seven in a row and are absolutely certain of featuring in the playoffs, perhaps against the Broncos late in the season.

The Broncos played their part in the Friday night thriller, and had good returns form the ever reliable Corey Parker and the origin ready Darius Boyd.

Parramatta Eels (13) v New Zealand Warriors (17)

For the second consecutive week the Warriors needed a match winner and this time they got someone who wasn’t Shaun Johnson.  Sure Johnson was magical earlier on in the match, in particular his 19th minute try and some clutch goalkicking, but the real star of the show was Bodene Thompson.

After the match was tied 13-all at the end of normal time, and the golden point period was coming to a close, Thompson took the opportunity to go unnoticed (most eyes were on Johnson and Townsend for the field goal) to crash over and get the Warriors their fifth win of 2015.

It should have been a little more comfortable for the Warriors, as they led 12-0 at half time despite losing Ryan Hoffman for the match in the 3rd minute and Leuluai to a similar fate in the 24th.  The double loss gave coach Andrew McFadden plenty of interchange headaches, and the toll on the Warriors players legs eventually told early in the second half.

Two tires inside six minutes at the start of the second half got the Eeels back in the game, and in truth they were the better team in the final moments and will be disappointed not to have capitalised on a weak Warriors left side.

The Warriors will be pleased with their rare away win, but they are not looking title material.  The five wins they have registered this season have come against the Eels (2), Raiders, Sharks and Tigers – hardly worrying.

Gold Coast Titans (22) v Cronulla Sharks (23)

The Second golden point match of the round saw the Sharks grab a much needed win over the Titans at Cbus Super Stadium.

Valentine Holmes was the scoreboard hero, kicking an 81st minute field goal to break the 22-all deadlock, but it was veteran Luke Lewis who provided the inspiration.
Lewis also had a try, however his contribution to both Jack Bird’s try and the first set of extra time was critical.  Lewis’ key plays and Andrew Fafita’s work rate will have please coach Shane Flanagan immensely, so too NSW coach Laurie Daley.
Aidan Sezar had earlier missed the chance to win the game in normal time when he failed to convert Anthony Don’s try from wide out.  The Titans will need to start taking opportunities like this if they are to get anything out of the season – a prospect looking unlikely after 10 rounds.

Melbourne Storm (16) v South Sydney Rabbitohs (12)

Adam Reynolds was always going to be a big loss for the Rabbitohs, and his absence saw his teammates struggle to match an imperious Storm side at AAMI Park.  Gutsy as they were without their pivot the Rabbitohs came up one try short, going down 16-12.

All of Melbourne’s points came in the first half.  Weak defence allowed Jesse Bromwich to waltz over for his first try of the season in the 19th minute to offset an early Bryson Goodwin penalty, and Melbourne extended their lead on the stroke of halftime when Billy Slater put Will Chambers away.

At 16-2 it looked as though Melbourne could run away with the fixture but Souths thought otherwise as they fought hard in the second half to keep their opponents scoreless and kept up the pressure with tries to wingers Alex Johnston and Aaron Gray.  Even in the closing stages they had their opportunities to snatch a win or send a third game of the Round to golden point but the final play just alluded them.

Melbourne go top of the table.  Important with origin just around the corner.  Whereas the Rabbits are 7th.

Queensland fans and Mel Maninga will be sweating on the availability of captain Cameron Smith.  Smith kicked out at Isaac Luke when looking for a quick play the ball.  He did seem unaware that Luke was in the tackle but at least three kicks made contact with Luke’s head – it could get interesting.

St George-Illawarra Dragons (32) v Canberra Raiders (18)

Sunday afternoon’s Dragons / Raiders clash lived up to its billing and matched the intensity from the team’s earlier Round 3 encounter.  The Dragons ultimately got the better of their Canberra based opponents but not before both teams were able to play end to end footy at its best.

Running behind a quality pack featuring the likes of Merrin, Frizzle, De Belin, Thompson and others the Dragons’ halves ran riot with ball and hand and expertly marshalled their team with deft kicking games.  Both Widdop and Marshall laid tries on for each other and also played parts in several of the other five Dragons’ tries.

Completing the season double versus the Raiders means the Dragons have now won seven of their past eight and helps them join the logjam at the top of the ladder at 14 points.

The win also displayed the Dragons attacking threat, piling on a season best 32 points to dampen the rumours of a weak offensive game plan.  They head into the bye in the best of moods while Ricky Stuart will have to help his side get to face the Bulldogs next week.

Newcastle Knights (22) v Wests Tigers (12)

Newcastle may have got their season back on track after they snapped a five game losing streak to beat the Tigers at Hunter Stadium in the last of the Sunday action.

The Knights were in charge for much of the day, but it took a late try to debutant Chad Redman to seal the 22-12 to win after earlier spending at least ten minutes defending their narrow 16-12 lead on their own goal line.  That pressure came about from a Robbie Farah 40/20, but the home side were able to hold on and get to the other end and safety – a controversial scrum win against the feed helping immeasurably.

Neither side got away to any great lead, instead trading tries to James McManus, Dene Halatau, David Fa’alogo and Luke Brooks, until the Knights scored two on the bounce to damaging centre Joey Leilua.

The Knights just miss out on a top 8 spot (their for and against record see them just slip behind the Warriors) but will be pleased to break a five week hoodoo that had threaten to completely derail their season after a nice start.

The Tigers were disappointed with their ability to create pressure on the oppositions tryline – Robbie Farah said so three times in one sentence during the press conference, but coach Jason Taylor did pay dues to Mitch Moses as one of the few capable of busting the defence open.

Manly Sea Eagles (10) v Penrith Panthers (11)

A Matt Moylan field goal capped off an impressive performance form the young fullback and delivered his team a tight win against Manly at Brookvale on Monday night.  Moylan was a the heart of everything good in the Panthers play, both on attack and in defence.

His field goal and natural poise in every facet of the game overshadowed a record-setting Brett Stewart double – the veteran becoming the most prolific Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles try-scorer in the process.  Both of Stewart’s tries came in a first half that Manly edged 10-6.

The Panthers rarely threatened in the first half but improved after the break and kept the home side scoreless in the second half.  Jamie Soward helped get them within two with a fine play to put Dallin Watene-Zelzniak away before Moylan kicked a 72nd minute penalty and a 73rd minute droopy.

The droppy from 39m out was the play that will make most of the highlight reels, but it was his positioning of Waqa Blake (a pass that Blake spilled with an open try line) that better illustrated his worth to Rugby League.

Of concern to the Panthers was the late injury to George Jennings.  The young outside back appeared to break his leg and could be out for up to 6 weeks.
