Horse Racing Preview – Monday 18th May

There is horse racing action on turf at Redcar, Leicester and Windsor on Monday and we have tips at all three meetings.

The 3.50 at Redcar sees a very quick reappearance for Desert Law who finished third at York last week. We made him a speculative each-way selection in a big field and he stuck on well enough after looking to hold every chance at the furlong pole. It is interesting that he turns out again so quickly with Graham Lee taking over in the saddle. He may have seen too much daylight that day as he is not the easiest horse to win with. The big danger looks to be Noble Asset who was a good second at Doncaster last time.

The 7.05 race at Windsor has only attracted three runners but Silver Wings looks good value at around even money. He bounced out smartly and made all here on his debut but missed a beat at the start at Chester. He soon made up the ground and looked set to win at the furlong pole only to be out-battled by Rah Rah. That could turn out to be very decent form and he is preferred to Soapy Aitken.

In the 7.35 race, Roger Varian runs Tazffin, a well-bred maiden who was second at Newmarket to Irish Rookie on her debut last season. That filly was second in the French 1000 Guineas this spring while Tazffin’s dam was the useful Tarfshi, winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes in Ireland. Varian has decided to run her in a hood on Monday so she may have her quirks but most of her rivals have never seen a racecourse before.

At Leicester, there is a fascinating handicap at 7.45. Richard Fahey was overshadowed at York by Mark Johnston last week but did finally get on the score-sheet on Friday and has had two more winners since. He saddles impressive Musselburgh winner, Third Time Lucky.

He made all to slam Go Dan Go on the Scottish track and looks very leniently treated here on a mark of 79. The runner-up has since won twice, last time by five lengths off a mark of 74. There are dangers, particularly Godolphin’s Muqarred and the John Gosden-trained Occult, but 9-2 looks a good price for the Fahey runner.

Silver Wings 7.05 Windsor @11-10 Betfair

Tazffin 7.35 Windsor @2-1 Bet365

Third Time Lucky 7.45 Leicester @9-2 Ladbrokes

Windsor Preview – Monday 11th May

Windsor on a Monday night is always popular with punters and there is a typically competitive card this evening. The feature race is the Royal Windsor Stakes at 7.20 with Shifting Power expected to start a short-priced favourite.

This race is something of a conundrum with none of the seven runners ideally suited by the good to fast ground. Shifting Power certainly has the best form on his Irish 2000 Guineas run behind Kingman in soft ground and he was fourth in the Newmarket classic on good ground. He produced his best run in very testing ground in France and he did seem to carry his head awkwardly at Sandown last time.

Clon Brulee really needs a mile and a quarter while Baltic Knight is fitted with blinkers for the first time. I like Intransigent but he’s never won over a mile or at this time of year. By process of elimination, I’m going for Complicit who has been running well on the all-weather. Tom Queally tried to steal a march on Tryster in the all-weather championships but was just run out of it in the final stages.

The two-year-old picture takes a while to settle down and experience counts for a lot in these early races. Alaskan Phantom ran well over course and distance on his debut for Daniel Kubler and could be worth a bet at around 9-2. The obvious dangers are the unraced Bournemouth Belle and Tears In My Eyes, from the yards of Richard Hannon and Jeremy Noseda respectively.

Ryan Moore seldom leaves Windsor without a winner and he should score on Genres in the 6.20. He made a very pleasing debut when just beaten by Exosphere having headed that horse inside the final furlong. John Gosden’s colt only needs to find normal improvement to get off the mark here. The main threat could come from Andrew Balding’s Scarlet Minstrel.

The 6.50 is a trappy handicap with only five remaining runners. You can make a case for each of them but I just prefer the claims of top weight Subcontinent. He put up a gutsy display to win at Doncaster last time out and has only been raised 3lbs. Shadow Rock ran well for a long way at Salisbury and could pose a bigger threat than the favourite Quick Defence.

Alaskan Phantom 5.50 @9-2 William Hill

Genres 6.20 @5-6 Ladbrokes

Subcontinent 6.50 @3-1 Boylesports

Complicit 7.20 @5-1 Bet365

Windsor Tuesday Preview

A very nice 310-1 treble at Doncaster on Saturday courtesy of Code Red (11-1), Dungannon (8-1) and Elm Park (15-8). I hope that you were on but what happened to Emerahldz? Isn’t it just typical that Richard Fahey won the race with his second string.

Flat racing is doing its best to delay the onset of winter with the Breeders’ Cup later this week and I shall be previewing the big races in detail. In the meantime they are still racing on the level at Windsor and Tuesday’s card looks promising for favourite backers.

The action kicks off at 1.00 and Martyn Meade’s Navigate looks likely to go off at odds-on here. He ran a good race at York last time in a much better race won by Mutamakkin and had chief rival Nortron about five lengths behind in sixth. Andrew Balding’s runner was making his debut so should improve but Navigate was travelling like a winner at the furlong pole and should appreciate the shorter trip here.

Magic Dancer looks like another solid favourite in the second race. He is a son of Norse Dancer who some of you may remember was third in the 2000 Guineas and fourth in the Derby. I backed him each-way for the Derby and he looked as though he was sure to get placed but the trip just caught him out. Magic Dancer was beaten a nose on his debut but I am not quite sure how. I have watched the video several times and every time he looks like he’s won it.

We cannot desert the Balding stable after his Saturday double and Geordan Murphy was laughing at the opposition when winning here last time out. He could be let in lightly with a rating of 75 and has most to fear from Meade’s Solo Hunter. He also looked like he’d won at Chepstow last time but the photo finish revealed otherwise. Remind me never to bet on photo finishes!

In the 2.30 I am told that So Noble is still ahead of the handicapper with a 6lbs penalty. He did win with his ears pricked last time so there should be more in the locker. The danger has to be that man Fahey again with Rangi Chase who won easily in similar ground at Pontefract.

If we have put the blight on the favourites, my final selection of the day is for another course and distance winner in Dalgig. David Pipe will be bringing out his big guns for the new jumps season shortly but saddled an eight-length flat winner at Newbury at the weekend. Dalgig won easily last time and has a hood on here to prevent him from star-gazing in the closing stages. He’s actually lower in the weights if you take Mikey Ennis’s 7lbs claim into account and 8-1 was too good to miss.

Navigate 1.00 @4-6 Betfair

Magic Dancer 1.30 @10-11 Betfair

Geordan Murphy 2.00 @5-2 Bet Victor

So Noble 2.30 @13-8 Bet365

Dalgig 3.30 @8-1 Ladbrokes

Windsor Monday Preview

We did well enough at Newbury on Saturday with Mount Athos and Cannock Chase keeping us in profit. Newmarket proved trickier to unravel and Stomp was beaten in the Coral Sprint. I felt that he did not really get the run of the race but stuck on well enough to suggest he can claim a decent prize this season.

The pick of Monday’s action is at Windsor and all signs point to Café Society in the 8.05. The David Simcock-trained four-year-old caught the eye on his seasonal debut when sixth at Newmarket behind The Mighty Yar.

Jamie Spencer rode him into a never-nearer sixth place without giving him a hard time. He was slowly away but settled not far behind the eventual winner The Mighty Yar. He also had Van Percy in close proximity for much of the race and the Balding-trained horse came out and won on Saturday. Spencer found the gaps closing when he went to make a forward move while Ryan Moore had a smooth passage on The Mighty Yar. He wouldn’t have beaten him but he could have been third or fourth with a clear run.

We have been caught out before by Café Society after he went into the notebook with a fast finishing second to Bold Sniper at Ascot. Things did not go his way on his next outing when heavily backed but there is little in the opposition here to cause concern.

Café Society has always promised to win a valuable prize and this could be a nice stepping-stone to one of the big handicaps at Royal Ascot next month. He looked a desperately unlucky loser at Ascot l last year behind Bold Sniper and his turn is surely not far away.

Jakey hung badly at Epsom last time out when finishing only fifth behind Beacon Lady. Modernism has been on the go all winter on the all-weather and looks to be bottoming out while Nicholascopernicus was beaten 40 lengths on his first outing. Ballinderry Boy is the most obvious threat, mainly because he is trained by Balding and ridden by Oisin Murphy. Even so, this is well short of his best trip of two miles and Café Society can finally get things right.

Café Society 8.05 Windsor at 6-4 Bet365, Paddy Power
